‘TALK,’ ‘CONVERSATIONS’ WIN AWARDS

The U.S. Film Festival, showcase for independently produced movies, has awarded grand prizes to the dramatic feature “Smooth Talk” and the documentary “Private Conversations.”

The 10-day film festival is sponsored by actor-director Robert Redford’s Sundance Institute and the Utah State Film Development Office.

“Smooth Talk,” produced by Martin Rosen and directed by Joyce Chopra, stars Laura Dern, Treat Williams, Mary Kay Place and Elizabeth Berridge. The screenplay by Tom Cole is based on the Joyce Carol Oates novel, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?”

The film is about the first sexual experiences of 15-year-old girl with a young man who is from “the other side of the tracks.”

The documentary film “Private Conversations” was produced and directed by Christian Blackwood. It is a behind-the-scenes look at the making of a television movie based on the Arthur Miller play “Death of a Salesman”

Each winner received $2,500, festival officials said.
