A 14-year-old Thousand Oaks boy was killed and his mother critically injured Thursday when their car went out of control on a rain-slicked road near Camarillo and smashed into a power pole, the California Highway Patrol said.

The boy, who was not immediately identified, and his mother, Katherine Min-Junghee, 38, were driving west at about 6:45 a.m. in heavy rain on Santa Rosa Road about half a mile west of Las Posas Road when their car slid sideways and hit the pole, shearing the car in half, CHP Dispatcher Ray Sandoval said.

The boy was taken to Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo, where he died at 8:04 a.m., a hospital spokeswoman said. The mother, whose left leg was severed in the crash, was in critical condition. Her other leg had to be amputated, the spokeswoman said.

Traffic was stopped for 2 1/2 hours on Santa Rosa Road and power was out for several hours in the area, Sandoval said.
