BAROQUE MUSIC FESTIVAL SLATED FOR JUNE AT UCLA

A weeklong festival of baroque music, with appearances by baroque specialists Christopher Hogwood and James Richman and visiting ensembles--among them the Concert Royal, the New York Baroque Dance Company and Ensemble Chanterelle--was announced by the UCLA department of music Friday. The festival will take place on the Westwood campus, June 24-29.

The festival will include six evening performances in Royce and Schoenberg halls, five noon recitals in Schoenberg Hall and six morning panel discussions at a location to be announced, said Robert H. Gray, dean of the College of Fine Arts.

Funding of the $400,000 festival is being provided by the Nakamichi Foundation of Los Angeles (Nakamichi Corp. USA is the North American subsidiary of a Japanese audio component manufacturer).

Hogwood, conducting the festival ensemble of soloists, will open the festival, June 24 and 25, with two different programs of 18th-Century Venetian music in Royce Hall.

Richman will lead the Concert Royal and New York Baroque Dance Company in two performances of his production of Rameau’s “Les Fetes d’Hebe,” June 28 and 29 in Royce Hall; this will be the modern-day premiere of the opera-ballet, which was first produced in Paris in 1739.

A recital of 17th-Century Venetian vocal music, with sopranos Judith Nelson and Mary Rawcliffe and bass David Thomas, is scheduled in Schoenberg Hall, June 26. The following evening (June 27), a program of French and Italian baroque music will feature violinists Stanley Ritchie and Daniel Stepner, gambaist Laura Jeppesen and harpsichordist Elizabeth Wright. This program will also be in Schoenberg Hall.

Performers at the noon recitals in Schoenberg Hall, June 24-28, include the Hotteterre Ensemble from Tokyo, the Ensemble Chanterelle, and lutanist Paul O’Dette and baroque dancers Sandra Hammond and Regine Astier.

Administering the event will be MaryAnn Bonino, music professor at Mount St. Mary’s College, who will serve as executive director; Frederick Hammond, music professor at UCLA, who will be general director, and Thomas Harmon, chairman of the UCLA department of music, who will be committee chairman.
