Villa Park : City Seeking to Join Insurance Authority

Share

The city of Villa Park, uninsured since mid-December, has found a source for insurance and is now applying for coverage, City Manager Carolyn Veregge said Friday.

Veregge said the city is applying for membership in the Southern California Joint Powers Insurance Authority. The 48-city group, made up primarily of Los Angeles County municipalities, is an organization which charges each member a premium and provides coverage for all members.

Veregge said the authority’s Executive Committee approved Villa Park’s application for membership, but the city will not know if it is formally accepted until mid-February, when member cities will be finished voting on the application. In order to be accepted into the authority, 35 cities must approve the application.

The city lost its coverage at midnight Dec. 11 when its insurance policy ran out and the Chicago Insurance Co., which covered the city for a $27,000 yearly premium, went out of the municipality coverage business.
