Kinfolk From Bisbee

Share

As you descend from “the divide” in the Mule Mountains, the sight of the copper-red hills greets you. The entrance to Bisbee is open. From western Cork, Ireland, came the miners to work for Phelps-Dodge. My father, Bert Power, was one of those men. My two aunts, Maggie Power and Mary O’Neill, ran a boardinghouse for miners on the main street in lower Bisbee.

I can still hear the mine whistle blowing and remember Brophy’s garage, Evergreen Cemetery . . . the largest open-pit mine in the world, trips to Ft. Huachucha. . . .
