Fountain Valley : Council Will Consider Amending Curfew Law
The City Council will consider an ordinance to amend the city’s 10 p.m. curfew, making exceptions for minors who are involved in parent- or school-sanctioned activities.
On Sept. 17, the council tabled an ordinance to change the curfew to 11 p.m., as first requested by the city’s Youth Commission, and asked staff to find an alternative that would allow youths to participate in “approved” late-night activities, according to City Manager Judy Kelsey.
A controversy over teen-age curfews arose in Newport Beach last summer when the city sought to make their curfew legally enforceable. To do this, the city voted to amend the curfew to make exceptions for teen-agers involved in constitutionally protected activities, such as those involving their jobs, or if they were en route from school or church functions.
