The Nation : Reagan Tax Stance Scored

Share

House Democrats, adjourning an upbeat weekend retreat in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., attacked President Reagan’s opposition to raising taxes as a method of reducing budget deficits, saying that Reagan’s position is dangerous and out of touch with economic reality. The Democrats said, however, that it would be folly for them to take the lead on the tax issue so long as the President maintains his opposition. House Majority Leader Jim Wright (D-Tex.) deplored the President’s view that tax increases aren’t necessary. “I think the President’s engaging in the greatest and most dangerous example of fantasy that I have ever seen engaged in by anyone in the White House,” Wright told reporters.
