Garden Grove : D.A. Will Investigate Shooting of Transient
At the request of Garden Grove police, the Orange County district attorney’s office will investigate a weekend incident in which an officer shot and wounded a teen-ager charged with robbery.
Marcos Tovarcadena, 17, described as a transient, was shot in the hip by an officer shortly after 12:20 a.m. Sunday. Police said Tovarcadena and two other youths, who were arrested and charged with robbery of a Burger King at 13992 Brookhurst St., had attempted to flee.
The three men are accused of tying up employees of the fast-food restaurant and assaulting them with “hammers and pipes,” Garden Grove Police Sgt. Bruce Beauchamp said. “A couple of them came out with some pretty nasty bruises.”
Tovarcadena remained in serious condition in the intensive care unit of Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, a spokeswoman said Monday night.
Miguel G. Hernandez, 19, and Jorge N. Martinez, 18, were booked in the Orange County Jail on robbery charges, Beauchamp said.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Maurice Evans said Monday that investigations of police-related shootings by the district attorney’s office are routine procedure.
