Patrick M. Callan, director of the California Postsecondary Education Commission, has announced his resignation from the influential education advisory panel, effective July 1. Established in 1974, the commission acts as an independent, non-partisan adviser to the Legislature and the governor on policies affecting the 1.7 million students enrolled in the state’s trade schools, community colleges and four-year universities. Under Callan’s direction, the commission has found itself at odds with some of California’s most influential politicians over many of the thorniest issues facing education--including tuition, the role of community colleges and remedial education.
