A Garden Grove man was arrested Monday night in Van Nuys on suspicion of attempting to murder a police officer who was investigating a report of an attempted kidnaping, Los Angeles police said.

The man, Ruben Hurtado, 20, was arrested after he held a gun on the officer in front of a house that reportedly was the site of a kidnaping attempt that police believe was drug-related, Sgt. Gerd Konieczny said.

When officers arrived at the house in the 14800 block of Calvert Street about 10 p.m. they were confronted by several armed men, including Hurtado, Konieczny said. One of the officers fired at Hurtado and missed, he said, and Hurtado and the other men did not return the fire.

Relatives and friends of the people inside the house then overpowered Hurtado and held him until he was arrested, Konieczny said.

Police gave no details of the alleged kidnaping attempt or say what happened to the other armed men.

Hurtado suffered head injuries when he was subdued by the neighbors, Konieczny said. He was treated at the jail ward of the County-USC Medical Center and transferred to the Los Angeles County Jail Tuesday, where he was held without bail, jail officials said.

An investigation of the incident is continuing, Konieczny said.
