Rep. Bobbi Fiedler’s campaign staff invited the news media this afternoon to listen to five hours of released secretly recorded conversations that led to the political payoff indictment of the congresswoman and her top aide and fiance, Paul Clarke.

Neither Fiedler, who was in Washington, nor Clarke, who was said to be ill, was to be present.

The two were indicted for, for allegedly offering $100,000 to state Sen. Ed Davis to drop out of the Republican senatorial primary, a felony violation of a state Elections Code law.

Fiedler spokeswoman Judy Ridgeway said the grand jury transcripts also might be released to the reporters present at the meeting place in Encino.

Prosecutors have described the tapes as key evidence against Fiedler and Clarke, but the two defendants have maintained the conversations will demonstrate their innocence.
