MCA Has Record Quarter and 2nd-Highest Year Ever

MCA, the entertainment conglomerate, reported record earnings of $51.7 million for the fourth quarter while its 1985 net profit of $149.9 million was the second highest in its history.

The company attributed the results primarily to filmed entertainment, its records and music group and book publishing. In comparable periods last year, MCA posted fourth-quarter net profit of $18.6 million and full-year net income of $94.9 million.

Revenue set new records, the company reported. In the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, the figure was $623.9 million, compared to $497 million in the same period a year ago.

For the full year, revenue totaled $2.1 billion, compared to $1.7 billion a year earlier.

MCA’s operating income was $215 million in 1985 and $73.7 million in the fourth quarter. Of that, $145.7 million and $61.9 million, respectively, were from filmed entertainment. The division includes theatrical films, television, home video and pay television and its studio tour and amphitheater.
