South Bay : Candidates for Elections

The candidates for the municipal elections scheduled for April 8 were determined in four South Bay cities this week when the extended deadline for filing passed on Tuesday.

In Lawndale, Lomita, Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach, the filing period was extended five days because one or more incumbents in each city did not file for reelection.

Lawndale voters will chose a mayor, a city council member and a city clerk in the April 8 election. Incumbent Mayor Sarann Kruse, 46, is opposed by Councilman James D. Ramsey, 48.

Candidates for the council post left vacant by Ramsey are Louise Jones, 75, Virginia Rhodes, 50, Larry Rudolph, 48, and Anthony Smith, 37.

Roslyn Havertape, 34, Gary McDonald, 26, and Neil Roth, 43, are running for the city clerk’s position left vacant when Joyce Smith moved out of the city.

In Lomita, three City Council positions will appear on the ballot. Incumbent Leonard Loy did not file for another term. Incumbents, Robert Hargrave, 47, and Harold Hall, 76, will run against Peter J. Rossik, 62.

Three City Council seats are open in Hermosa Beach. Incumbents Jack Wood, 42, and George Barks, 43, are challenged by Etta Simpson, 64, Jim Rosenberger, 39, and June Williams, 57. Incumbent Gary Brutsch is not seeking reelection.

Two council seats will appear on the ballot in Manhattan Beach where neither of the incumbents, Russ Lesser and Jim Walker, is seeking reelection. The candidates are Steve Barnes, 41, Mike Collins, 32, Geraldine (Gerry) Johnson, 49, Laurence Dougharty, 45, Tim Lilligren, 32, Bruce S. Ponder, 38, and Connie Sieber, 43.

The candidates in the remaining seven cities holding April elections were determined on Jan. 30 because all of the incumbents in those cities filed for reelection. Those cities are Palos Verdes Estates, Rolling Hills, Hawthorne, Gardena, Carson, El Segundo and Avalon.
