Pacific 10 Roundup : Arizona Defeats Cal, 61-52, and Takes Over First Place

Guard Craig McMillan scored 21 points, 15 in the first half, to lead Arizona to a 61-52 victory over California Thursday night at Berkeley and give the Wildcats sole possession of the Pacific 10 lead.

Arizona (16-6 overall, 7-2 in conference) moved into first place as UCLA beat Washington, 94-88, in overtime at Pauley Pavilion.

Arizona took control of the game for good late in the first half when McMillan scored six straight points to give the Wildcats a 29-20 lead. By halftime, Arizona led, 34-26.

Arizona won the game at the foul line, where the Wildcats outscored Cal, 17-2, including 8-0 in the first half.

Freshman Sean Elliott had 15 points for Arizona, which won for the 11th in its last 13 games.

Chris Washington and Michael Taylor each scored 12 points for California (13-7, 5-5). It was Cal’s third straight loss.

Arizona St. 77, Stanford 75 (OT)--Guard Steve Beck hit a jump shot from the top of the key with seven seconds left in overtime to give Arizona State a come-from-behind victory at Stanford.

Beck, who led all scorers with 28 points, scored six of his team’s seven points in the extra period. The 6-3 junior sank two long jump shots and two free throws in the final 1:47 in overtime to give the Sun Devils the victory.

Lichti scored 23 points and Whitsitt added 21 for Stanford (11-11, 5-5). Arizona is now 10-10 and 4-6.
