Svetlana Alexandrovna Prokudina, the Soviet woman who was airlifted from a fishing trawler to receive medical care at a San Diego hospital, was reunited with her Soviet shipmates Friday.
The trawler Gnevnyy, which was more than 300 miles south of San Diego on Wednesday, sailed closer to San Diego waters to pick up Prokudina. The ship was met six miles from shore Friday by a private craft arranged through the Soviet Embassy in Washington.
Prokudina suffered a miscarriage and could not be treated on the fishing and research vessel. After undergoing surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla Tuesday she was eager to return to her ship but could not because the vessel was too far away.
A hospital utility car was needed to carry the gifts the woman received from well-wishers during her stay at the hospital. Three stuffed teddy bears, record albums, promotional T-shirts, and newspaper clippings recounting her stay in San Diego were among the items she took back to the ship with her.
