Coast Highway Section Closed by Surf Action
A three-mile stretch of Pacific Coast Highway was closed Saturday for about four hours because surf was breaking across the road.
A Huntington Beach Police Department spokesman said the road was closed between Warner Avenue and Golden West Street at 8:20 a.m., when high tide hit and pushed surf to the highway.
The pounding surf caused major damage to the beach at Bolsa Chica State Park. Lifeguard Jerry Maier estimated about a foot of shoreline washed away.
At noon Saturday, the parking lot at Bolsa Chica was still flooded, and crews were removing the sand left behind.
“We’re still looking to see what the full extent of the damage is,” Maier said. “It will take a while to assess it all.”
The most extensive damage occurred on a bike trail on the east end of the beach, Maier said. About 200 yards of asphalt were washed away, he said.
Almost one inch of rain fell between dusk Friday and dawn Saturday, officials said.
