San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein has signed into law an ordinance that bars the city from dealing with companies that do business with South Africa. Feinstein said the measure was designed to “say as loudly and clearly as we can” that the city rejects racism. Under the ordinance, San Francisco may not contract with companies that have financial ties to South Africa, or invest money with monetary institutions linked to that country, because of its apartheid policies of racial segregation. Contracts of less than $5,000 are exempt from the ordinance.
