Auctioneers raked in $2.6 million in the sale of 125 Houston homes, the largest public sale of single-family homes in U.S. history. Another 125 homes will be auctioned off today. About 1,000 people attended the auction of houses taken over by the Veterans Administration after owners could not make loan payments. Sally LePla of Larry Latham Auctioneers said buyers paid from $3,500 to $87,000 for the houses and vacant lots. The average price was about $21,000. Her company will sell 150 houses for the VA next month in Phoenix.
