“The Best of Elvis Costello and the Attractions.” CBS/Fox. $24.98. Costello, the most acclaimed rock lyricist of the post-punk era, professes little liking for videos because he believes they interfere with the viewer’s freedom to interpret a song, so it’s fascinating to watch him stumble and lip-sync his way through 22 of his own videos without really defining any of the songs. The main changes as Costello goes from clip to clip are in the lighting (often moody) and the mostly arbitrary settings (from tropical isle to hotel hallway in “Peace, Love and Understanding”). Not high video art by any means, but a must for fans.
