United Airlines’ inaugural schedule includes departures from New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu, Osaka, Japan, and Bangkok, Thailand, coming nearly 10 months after the airline announced it was buying Pan Am’s Pacific routes for about $750 million. The deal also stipulated that United receives 11 Boeing 747s, six Lockheed L-1011s, 1,200 flight attendants and 400 pilots from Pan Am, the loss-plagued carrier that pioneered air travel to the Pacific 50 years ago. The route takeover was delayed due to a lengthy U.S. review and a snag in Japan.
