Pensions: The Senate Constitutional Amendments Committee approved a ballot measure (SCA 32) by Sen. Wadie P. Deddeh (D-Chula Vista) to prohibit large windfall pension increases scheduled to go into effect next year for former elected state officeholders. A 4-0 vote sent the measure to the Appropriations Committee. If approved by the Legislature, it would appear on the November general election ballot for voter ratification.

Miscellany Deja Vu: Willie McCovey, former first baseman and slugger for the San Francisco Giants, was honored by an Assembly resolution commending his recent induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Presenting McCovey with the resolution was another famous Willie from San Francisco--Assembly Speaker Willie Brown. The recipient got a big laugh when he quipped, “I was just standing here thinking that some things never change. I went through my entire Giants career being ‘the other Willie.’ ” McCovey’s reference, of course, was to his former teammate, Hall of Fame center fielder Willie Mays.
