Orange County College Baseball : Cal State Fullerton Defeats San Diego State, 10-2

Jim Halley, a senior transfer from the University of Texas El Paso, went the distance for the second time in two starts Tuesday by throwing a nine-hitter to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 10-2 victory over San Diego State in a nonconference game played at Titan Field.

Halley, a graduate of Magnolia High School who pitched at Rancho Santiago College, struck out six and walked just one in improving his record to 2-0 and Fullerton’s to 4-1. The Titans scored two runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead and then opened the game with a three-run seventh and a four-run eighth.

Bob Mellano highlighted the seventh inning with a pinch-hit, two-run single. John Eccles hit a three-run home run to key the eighth. Eccles also had a double and finished with four RBIs.

The Titans travel to the University of Arizona Thursday for a three-game series, featuring single games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Aztecs drop to 1-2.

In other college baseball action:

Cal State Dominguez Hills 2, UC Irvine 1--The Toros scored two runs in the third inning and held off the Anteaters for a nonconference win at Dominguez Hills.

Brian Ayers, a junior right-hander from Fountain Valley High, pitched a complete-game, five-hitter to pace the Toros. Rob Johnson, a junior left-hander from Santa Ana High, went the distance on a three-hitter for Irvine.

The Toros (4-1) loaded the bases on two walks and an infield single in the third, and John Beuder followed with a two-run single to provide Dominguez Hills with all the offense it would need.

The Anteaters (3-2) scored their run in the fifth inning when Mike Faye singled, went to third on a single by Doug Kline, and scored when Devon Shockley grounded into a fielder’s choice.

Southern California College 8, University of Redlands 3--Ben Steppanoff had three hits, two RBIs, two stolen bases and scored two runs to lead the Vanguards past the Bulldogs in a nonconference game at Redlands that was called after eight innings because of darkness.

Jim McCahill added three hits and two runs, while Mark Deushane went the distance on a six-hitter and struck out nine. SCC is 2-0.
