Trial of two Salvadoran Notional Guard corporals accused of killing two American land reform experts and a Salvadoran five years ago began with the selection of a jury in San Salvador. Santiago Gomez Gonzales and Jose Dimas Valle confessed to the killings after their arrest in 1982 but claimed they were following orders. Charges have been dropped against two officers accused of ordering the soldiers to kill Mark David Pearlman of Seattle, Michael P. Hammer of Potomoc, Md., and Rudolfo Viera, head of El Salvador’s Agrarian Reform Institute.
