College Basketball Roundup : Upshaw Leads Utah Past Texas El Paso, 71-67

Kelvin Upshaw scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half as Utah opened a 16-point lead over 15th-ranked Texas El Paso and held on to defeat the Miners, 71-67, in a Western Athletic Conference basketball game at Salt Lake City Friday night.

Jerry Stroman finished with 18 points, and Mitch Smith had 12 for the Utes (15-8 overall and 7-4 in the conference). Dave Feitl paced UTEP (21-4, 9-3) with 25 points.

Brigham Young 74, New Mexico 67--Bob Capener scored 30 points, and Jeff Chatman added 17 to lead the Cougars to victory at Provo, Utah.

The win, coupled with Utah’s defeat of Texas El Paso, put the Cougars in first place in the WAC with a 9-2 record. The victory was BYU’s 11th straight, and the Cougars are 14-9 overall.

Johnny Brown led New Mexico (14-10 overall and 6-6 in the WAC) with 25 points.

Cornell 61, Brown 58--John Bajusz and Josh Wexler each sank a pair of free throws in the final four seconds at Providence, R.I., as the Big Red tied the Bruins for first place in the Ivy League.

Bajusz paced Cornell (11-10 overall and 6-3 in the league) with 23 points. Jim Turner led Brown (12-9, 6-3) with a game-high 25 points.
