COLLEGE BASKETBALL : Turnovers Cost Master’s, 87-84

The Master’s College led Southern California College by a point with 1:40 remaining, but two turnovers in the final minute cost it an NAIA District III basketball game, 87-84, Friday night.

Southern California took the lead and then made 6 of 7 free throws to seal the win.

The Master’s trailed by 11 with nine minutes left but came back behind Pete Coeler’s 16 second-half points. Southern California College was led by Ken Barsley, who scored 13 of his game-high 27 in the final 20 minutes.

Despite outshooting The Master’s, 70% to 49% in the first half, Southern California College led by only six points at the intermission.

The Mustangs, who have lost 16 of their last 17 games, dropped to 6-21 and 1-10.

Antelope Valley 102, Valley 89--Antelope Valley got its fast break going in the second half and had four players score 20 points or more to lead it to the Mountain Valley Conference win at home.

Valley, which dropped its fifth straight, had five players score in double figures. Fred Lewis led the way with 16, while Rodney Wright added 13.

Ice Lewis led Antelope Valley (13-17, 3-5) with 24 points and Calvin Francis had 22. Valley fell to 10-17 and 1-7.

Canyons 83, West L.A. 70--West L. A. slowed down the tempo and led by two at halftime. Canyons changed to a man-to-man defense in the second half and broke the game open.

Vincent Ray scored 18 of his 26 points and Anthony Hines had 11 of his 13 in the second half to help the Cougars improve their record to 7-1 (18-8 overall) in the Mountain Valley Conference. West L. A. fell to 2-6 (8-20 overall).

Hines made 6 of 8 shots and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Canyons. Derek Hughes added 11 assists. Jonathan Grind led the Oilers with 20 points.

Valley (women) 68, Canyons 46--The Lady Monarchs dominated the boards, out-rebounding Canyons, 59-25, to come away with a Mountain Valley Conference victory.

Sophomore forward Jill Daniels scored 13 of her game-high 19 in the first half as Valley took a 33-19 lead.

The Lady Monarchs (15-11, 7-1) will play Trade Tech at home on Wednesday in a game that might decide the conference championship.
