A 50-year-old nun was in good condition Saturday after she was slashed on the face by a resident of an emergency homeless shelter who thought she was withholding his welfare checks, police said.

Stamford police arrested Robert Pratt, 39, and charged him with second-degree assault shortly after the attack Friday on Sister Henrita Frost, police said.

Frost, head of the soup kitchen at the Main Street shelter, was reported in good condition at St. Joseph Medical Center. Doctors used 50 stitches to close the wound that extended from her right ear to the chin.

Pratt told police he thought welfare checks sent to the shelter had been withheld from him. He confronted Frost about the checks, pulled out a pocketknife and slashed her, police said.
