‘Granny Unit’ Law

I would be interested in reading about the “Companion Unit” law (S.B. 1160) by State Sen. Henry Mello (D-Watsonville), and its effect on California cities.

We applied for a “granny unit,” and felt our home was a model for this use. After a year of frustration--four public hearings and an appeal to the City Council after a Planning Commission denial--we were granted our unit (with the help of a lawyer).

We were under state guidelines and this city prohibited these secondary units with very weak findings. All other cities in this county have adopted the ordinance and, hopefully, will provide much needed housing here.
