Baseball Hall of Fame Inductions, Game Set for August 3
Induction ceremonies at the Baseball Hall of Fame will be held Aug. 3, Hall of Fame director Howard C. Talbot, Jr., announced.
The world champion Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers will play in the annual Hall of Fame game at Doubleday Field the following afternoon.
For the Royals, it will mark their first appearance in Cooperstown. Ordinarily, the Hall of Fame Game matches up one team from the American and another from the National but the change in format this year was necessitated by scheduling problems.
Talbot expressed appreciation to the American League for resolving a stalemate that placed the traditional game in jeopardy. He said American League president Bobby Brown and vice presisdent Bob Fishel were instrumental in resolving the problem.
Willie McCovey, voted into the Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers’ Assn. of America, will be inducted on Aug. 3 along with whatever other candidate or candidates are named by the Hall of Fame’s Veterans Committee, which meets in Tampa March 10.
Tickets for the Hall of Fame Game will go on sale March 12. There is no admission charge for the induction cemermonies.
