Local News in Brief : Fatal Hit-Run Accident Prompts Investigation
A 21-year-old San Fernando woman died early Sunday morning after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver on a Pacoima thoroughfare, Los Angeles police said.
Investigators said they have not learned why the woman, identified as Eulalia Martinez, was in the street when she was hit at about 2:45 a.m. in the 9700 block of San Fernando Road. The victim, who was unconscious when police arrived, was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where she died about 3:30 a.m., Officer Fred Tepstein said.
He said police do not know whether Martinez was walking or lying on the roadway when she was struck by the car, which was traveling south on San Fernando Road. Police are looking into the possibility that the woman could have been thrown into the street from a car, Tepstein said.
Witnesses told officers at the scene of the accident that the driver of the car fled immediately after hitting the victim. Valley Traffic and Foothill division detectives were investigating.
