College Tennis : Irvine Can’t Stay With Pepperdine

Kelly Jones led Pepperdine University to a 7-2 nonconference tennis victory over UC Irvine Tuesday at Malibu.
Jones defeated Bruce Man Son Hing in No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-4. Irvine’s Ken Derr was defeated by Robbie Weiss, 7-5, 6-2, in No. 2 singles. Pepperdine is 2-3 this season.
UCI (4-1) gained its only singles victory when Julian Barham defeated Martin Laurendeau, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. Barham is 5-1 in singles matches this season.
In women’s matches:
Golden West 7, San Diego Mesa 2--The Rustlers’ Terri Johnson defeated Shawn Cline, 6-1, 6-3, to lead Golden West to a nonconference win at home. Golden West’s No. 2 doubles team of Julie Fleming and Jeanette Lillard defeated Heidi Robison and Barbara Edwards, 6-2, 6-0.
UC Riverside 9, Chapman 0--Jill George led the Highlanders to a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. win by defeating Cindy Felker, 6-1, 6-2, in No. 1 singles. George combined with Trisha Weisman to defeat Felker and Sheryl Kuroda, 6-2, 6-4, in No. 1 doubles. Chapman is 0-1, 0-4.
