UCLA Exhibit to Feature Art of Italian Life
The first in-depth presentation in the United States of the Macchiaioli, a group of 19th-Century Italian painters, opens Tuesday at UCLA’s Wight Art Gallery.
The exhibition, entitled “The Macchiaioli: Painters of Italian Life (1850-1900)” will feature more than 150 paintings. The artists include Giovanni Fattori, Odoardo Borrani, Silvestro Lega and Telemaco Signorini.
Working at the time of the young French Impressionists, the Macchiaioli painted scenes of the Italian countryside, its people and cities.
The show was organized by the Wight Gallery. The exhibition is presented in cooperation with the Macchiaioli Archive in Rome and the city of Florence.
The show will be open to the public during regular gallery hours: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays, and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is free and parking is $3.
The UCLA Art Council Docents will conduct tours of the exhibition at 1 p.m. daily. The show closes April 20.
