L.A. Community College Layoffs

I can’t but wonder about the competence of Koltai and the board of trustees as shown in their approach to remedy the financial crisis of our system.

I am sure the imposition of the $50 student fee might have contributed somehow to the drop in enrollment. However, the firing of 142 certified and excellent teachers will only lower the quality and variety of courses offered at the colleges and will thereby only accelerate the decline in enrollment.

Cutting the services has never saved a financially troubled establishment, be it a university, college or private business. Such cuts can only contribute to a further decline in enrollment and will only tend to aggravate the existing problem and also aggravate the taxpayers who foot the bill.

It seems to me, that with a more competent administration, dedicated to the improvement of the educational standards and not to the improvement of their own living standards and the furthering of their political ambitions, the system would be in much better shape.
