After more than a month of scheduled maintenance and repairs, the Unit 2 reactor at the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant near San Luis Obispo has been restarted. Pacific Gas & Electric Co. spokesman Ron Weinberg said Unit 2 was operating at about 40% capacity on its way to full power for further testing. Two major tests remain to be completed at the seaside plant midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles before PG&E; will apply to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a commercial operating license. Weinberg says PG&E; hopes to have Unit 2 in commercial operation by early next month. The Unit 1 reactor is already operating at full power, producing electricity for more than a million customers.
