Buena Park : Thieves Take Diamonds From Penney Showcase

Share

While two men distracted sales clerks at a Buena Park J. C. Penney jewelry counter Friday, two accomplices--a man and a woman--used a lock pick to open a display case and steal $74,000 worth of diamond rings, Police Lt. Gary Rooney said.

The rings were not discovered missing until about 10 minutes after the four had left the store, which is located in the Buena Park Mall, Rooney said.

The first two men to approach the two female sales clerks “threw money on the counter to buy jewelry,” creating a diversion while another man and a woman sat on the other side of the counter near diamond rings locked in a showcase, Rooney said.

Within a few minutes, the man and woman left, followed soon after by the two men, he said.

Later, store officials discovered the display case had been unlocked, probably with a lock pick, Rooney said.
