WCAC Roundup : Parham’s 3-Point Play Helps Gonzaga Score 81-79 Upset of Loyola Marymount

Lennie Parham hit a 12-footer from the baseline, was fouled, and added the free throw with one second left Friday night to lift Gonzaga to an 81-79 West Coast Athletic Conference victory over Loyola Marymount.

Mike Yoest canned two free throws with seven seconds left to give Loyola a 79-78 lead. After Parham scored, Loyola failed on a last-second desperation shot.

Parham had 14 points and Mike Champion 19 for Gonzaga. Loyola received 23 points and 14 rebounds from Forrest McKenzie.

Gonzaga moved to 12-12 overall and 5-5 in the conference. Loyola is 16-8 and 8-2.

Gonzaga, outrebounded 40-22 in the game, led 41-39 at halftime.

Pepperdine 80, Portland 61--Dwayne Polee and Eric White scored 18 points each to lead the No. 20 Waves at Malibu.

The Waves (9-1, 21-4), in extending their homecourt winning streak to 26 games, took over first place in the conference after Gonzaga beat Loyola.

Pepperdine’s 21-4 record is the best in the school’s 47-year basketball history.

The score was tied, 22-22, with six minutes left when Pepperdine scored 12 straight points. The Waves led 38-28 at halftime and hit 19 of 26 second-half field-goal tries. Dan Hunt led the Pilots with 17 points and Thomas Thompson had 12. Portland fell to 12-12 and 3-7.
