Alert to Problems
One of the more serious concerns facing older people living alone is how to summon help when it is needed. In Westminster, that problem is getting first-class attention from the workers of the U.S. Post Office.
In a unique and most practical arrangement developed between the postal worker’s union and the Westminster Senior Center, elderly residents can sign up for the Postal Alert Plan. When they do, a sticker is placed on their mail box. If mail in that box is not picked up between deliveries, the letter carrier notifies the senior center. That’s the kind of special delivery that should spread to all ZIP codes.
