Sammy Swindell of Bartlett, Tenn., turned in the fastest qualifying time and then went on to win the 20-lap main event in Saturday’s opening program of the two-day World of Outlaws winged sprint car races at Ascot Park before 5,188 fans.

Bobby Davis of Memphis, Tenn., finished second; defending World of Outlaws champion Steve Kinser of Bloomington, Ind., was third, and Jac Haudenschild of Millersburg, Ohio, was fourth. The top four wrapped up the first four starting positions in today’s 30-lap final.

But because the top four will start in inverted order of their qualifying times, Swindell will be in the fourth spot, while Kinser, who started Saturday’s race in 18th, will be on the pole. Haudenschild will start alongside Kinser in the front row, Davis on the inside of Swindell in the second row.

Swindell, who started sixth Saturday, took over the top spot on the 14th lap, when he and leader Dave Bradway Jr. of Roseville, Calif., bumped coming off the fourth turn. While Swindell roared into the lead, Bradway, fighting to regain control, finally spun his car and backed softly into the crash wall in Turn 1 and out of the race.

The remainder of the field of 57 cars will return and start over again today with qualifying trials, heat races and a B main event to determine the remaining starting positions in the 22-car field for the main event.
