UCI Men Beat Chapman in Tennis

UC Irvine, the county’s 20th-ranked Division I men’s tennis team, defeated Chapman College, the top-ranked Division II team, in a nonconference match in Irvine Saturday, 5-2.

Irvine’s Bruce Man Son Hing, ranked No. 25 in Division I, beat Troy Turnbull, the No. 1 player in Division II, 6-4, 6-4. UCI’s Ken Durr beat John Soldat, 6-3, 6-3. Soldat is ranked No. 7 in Division II. The Anteaters’ Julian Barham beat Paul Wekesa, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Wekesa is ranked No. 8 in Division II. Irvine improved its record to 5-2; Chapman fell to 3-2. UCI plays Georgia Tech Monday at 1:30 in Irvine.

In women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 7, Colorado 2--The Anteaters improved to 1-1 in the five-team Brigham Young Invitational at Provo, Utah. Irvine’s Lola Trenwith defeated Linda Waterhouse, 6-2, 6-0, and Harako Shigekawa beat Susie Osterlund, 6-2, 6-0. The Anteaters also won all three doubles matches. UCI (7-7) meets Iowa in third-round play Monday.
