Ex-Superior Court Judge Lloyd S. Nix Dies

Share

Lloyd S. Nix, retired presiding judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court and a one-time city prosecutor, has died in Rancho Santa Fe. Nix, who was 90, had retired to San Diego County in 1967.

A highly decorated Army veteran of World War I, Nix received his law degree from USC and was practicing maritime law in San Pedro in 1929 when named city prosecutor by then-Los Angeles Mayor George Cryer. He returned to private practice for two years and in 1955 was appointed to the Superior Court by Gov. Goodwin J. Knight. In 1966 he became presiding judge.

While on the bench, Nix was credited with averting a strike that would have shut down the former Metropolitan Transit Authority but lost a battle to limit the stationing of bailiffs to selected courtrooms.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, daughters Lorraine, Colleen and Bennita, 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for Nix, who died Tuesday, was held Friday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Del Mar.
