Local News in Brief : 2 Killed as Car, Van Collide in Intersection
Two people were killed and a 14-year-old girl was critically burned Monday night in Granada Hills when a van and car collided at an intersection where traffic signals were not working because of a power outage, Los Angeles police said Tuesday.
The 20-year-old driver of the van and one of his passengers, a 14-year-old girl, both of Granada Hills, were killed, Los Angeles Sgt. Bob Farkas said. Their names were being withheld until formal identification could be made.
Another passenger in the van, Lisa Gable, 14, of Granada Hills, was in critical condition Tuesday night Sherman Oaks Community Hospital Burn Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The driver of the car, Ock Soo Shin, 51, of Sepulveda, was treated at Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills and released.
The accident occurred about 7:40 p.m. when the car, southbound on Hayvenhurst Avenue, and the van, eastbound on Chatsworth Street, collided in the intersection, Farkas said.
The van overturned and burst into flames, but Lisa crawled away and was pulled from the roadway by neighborhood residents, police said.
