An El Cajon woman was convicted Tuesday of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of her boyfriend on Dec. 25, 1984.
Lou Isabelle Jeffreys, 57, cried after hearing the verdict by a San Diego Superior Court jury that followed 3 1/2 days of deliberations. She was acquitted of first- and second-degree murder in the shooting, which took place at her El Cajon apartment.
Judge David Gill set sentencing for April 4 and allowed Jeffreys to remain free on $25,000 bond. She could receive eight years in state prison.
The case attracted attention at the time because the victim, Nick Trevino, 43, died after being transferred from Grossmont Hospital to the UC San Diego Medical Center because no trauma surgeon was available at Grossmont when he arrived.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Gloria Michaels had asked the jury to convict Jeffreys of first-degree murder, while her attorney, Gary Edwards, had argued for an acquittal based on self-defense.
