Officials disqualified all four runners in the men’s 400-meter race at an indoor track and field meet between Britain and the Soviet Union in Wolverhampton, England.
Brian Whittle and Vladimir Prosin collided on the second lap and went off the track. Max Roberton, the other British runner, was unable to avoid the pair and also went sprawling.
The three then finished the race behind the Soviet Union’s Vladimir Kzylov, but the match referee disqualified all four, the pile-up victims for leaving the track and Kzylov for running out of his lane.
The Soviets won the men’s competition, 88-58, and the women’s, 77-40.
