A teacher education program run by San Diego State University and the La Mesa-Spring Valley elementary school district has been chosen as the best of its kind in the United States and Canada by the Assn. of Teacher Educators.

The program, which pairs SDSU student teachers with top teachers at the Maryland Avenue elementary school in La Mesa, was chosen over 700 other entrants at a meeting of the association Tuesday night in Atlanta.

The 200 SDSU student teachers who have participated in the program since 1979 learn with “master teachers” who specialize in preparing teachers as well as teaching students, said Monica Murphy, acting director of SDSU’s School of Teacher Education. In return, they help the elementary school’s teachers with their duties.

They develop “a high degree of competence in instructional skills . . . because they have good models for that,” Murphy said.

SDSU won the same award for a separate on-campus program in 1980.
