Oakland Loses Again on Raiders
Oakland’s attempt to buy the Raiders football team and move it back from Los Angeles suffered a severe blow today when the state Supreme Court rejected the city’s appeal to reinstate its suit.
The court’s denial leaves the city with one last possibility--an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. Oakland has been trying to use its power of eminent domain to acquire the Raiders, but a state Court of Appeal ruled last November that the use of eminent domain to acquire a National Football League franchise was prohibited by the U.S. Constitution’s ban on undue local burdens on interstate commerce.
