Marcos Pondering Whether to Stay in Hawaii or Move On
Ferdinand E. Marcos, exhausted from his futile fight to remain president of the Philippines, was reported resting today and contemplating whether to settle in Hawaii or seek asylum elsewhere in the United States.
Marcos and his 88-member entourage arrived at Hickam Air Force Base on Wednesday and were in seclusion today under Secret Service protection in cottages on the base.
The former president told Gov. George Ariyoshi that he had initially wanted to settle in his home province of Ilocos Norte in the northern Philippines but that his family had insisted that he accompany them to the United States.
Ariyoshi said Marcos, a long-time friend, may decide in 24 hours whether to settle in Hawaii or move on.
The Honolulu Advertiser reported today that a bulletproof limousine for Marcos is being flown in from Chicago.
