Gov. George Deukmejian asked federal officials to reconsider their selection of the Port of Long Beach for unloading spent nuclear fuel from Taiwan. In a letter to Energy Department Secretary John Herrington, the governor asked that the department “evaluate alternatives that would permit these materials to be shipped directly to an offloading point located more closely to the South Carolina reprocessing facility. . . . In my judgment, a more direct route would further enhance the safety and security of these shipments.”
