Microcomputer Memories Lays Off 49 More Workers

Microcomputer Memories, a Chatsworth-based manufacturer of disk drives for personal computers, disclosed that it has laid off 49 employees as a result of a change in the way it markets its products.

The move follows last month’s dismissal of 26 employees by the company. At the time, company officials said the firings reduced employment to 100.

Company officials could not be reached for comment Monday.

In a press release, the company said it has begun supplying its disk drives directly to retailers and distributors. Previously, it sold the equipment to computer makers. Microcomputer Memories said the move will cut sales but also enable it to cut staff and improve profits.

Microcomputer Memories also reported that February sales for one of its new product lines, called Transpac, were higher than the company expected. Transpac is a 3.5-inch, disk drive system that can be carried in a briefcase.
