A 19-year-old man was shot and killed as he drove his car through a Southeast San Diego neighborhood Monday afternoon, police said.

David Lawrence Smith of San Diego was found by police slumped in the front seat of his car in the 6800 block of Skyline Drive about 3 p.m. He was taken by paramedics to Paradise Valley Hospital but died a short time later of a gunshot wound to the upper body.

Witnesses told police that Smith was shot by a young man who was standing on the curb on the north side of Skyline Drive. Smith coasted his car to the side of the road, where he was found by police, Officer Craig Ketcher said.

Ketcher said a suspect in the case, Kevin Joseph Brown, 18, of San Diego, turned himself in to police at 5 p.m. at the department’s Southeast San Diego substation.

Brown was booked into County Jail in connection with the slaying, Ketcher said. He said the case remains under investigation by homicide detectives.
