Officials at San Francisco Juvenile Hall defended their use of two young inmates to clean up a cell in which another juvenile had committed suicide. Juvenile Hall Assistant Director Jane Bailey said the boys, 12 and 14 years old, “showed no ill effects” despite the “noxious” nature of the work to which they were assigned after a 17-year-old hanged himself with a sweat shirt on Valentine’s Day. Bailey added that critics of the cleanup assignment were engaged in “after-the-fact second-guessing.” San Francisco Assistant Public Defender Joseph L.Spaeth reportedly demanded Bailey’s immediate removal from authority at the juvenile detention center after reading her account of the incident.
