Fight Between Smith, Arredondo Postponed
The junior welterweight title fight between World Boxing Council champion Lonnie Smith and top-ranked Rene Arredondo, scheduled for Saturday at the Olympic Auditorium, was postponed when Arredondo came down with an infected knuckle.
Arredondo said he had been sparring with a small cut on a knuckle of his left hand when it became infected and swollen. He saw a doctor Sunday and announced his injury later that night, just as Smith was arriving in Los Angeles from Denver.
Arredondo, whose hand is still swollen and purple after treatment, said it would be two to three weeks before he could fight again. Smith, meanwhile, said that he would be seeking a nontitle fight in the interim.
